The secret is out

Last Friday while I went out with friends to see the musical Waitress, which was amazing by the way, Jeremy took the girls to Riley's volleyball game.  Riley often plays and fidgets with various things from headphone cords to edges on items.  She was touching something and Jeremy asked her to put it down and stop.  She decided to open the glove compartment box in Jeremy's car.  At the top of the items in the box, were labels that read "To Riley From Santa."  Jeremy had placed them in there around Christmas as we just needed them put somewhere that wouldn't be seen.

Riley's eyes grew really wide and she looked at Jeremy and then looked back at the labels and then looked back at Jeremy.  She now knew.  With Julia in the back seat, Riley did an amazing job of hiding her discovery as she could have completely blown it for Jules too.  Jeremy simply whispered "I'm sorry.  This isn't how we wanted you to find out."  This wasn't how we'd planned, but it was better.  It simply just happened.

Julia saw Riley's name on the labels and asked them why Riley's name was written on them.  Jeremy told her not to worry about it.

When they got to volleyball, Riley realized she had left her water bottle in the car.  Jeremy asked her which one it was and Riley responded with "It's the white one... from Santa."  And gave him a look that said it all.

The next day she texted us asking if we wouldn't bring up what had happened as she wanted to forget about what she knew and just forget it had happened.  Then asked us to delete the text as she didn't want Julia to see it which was very thoughtful.

In a snarky mood that weekend, I went over as she was doing homework and whispered "Be careful - Santa is always watching."  It was very teasing and she gave a glare with a half smile.  I gave her a hug and said I was sorry she had found out the way she had.  We haven't mentioned it since.
