States Fair Project
Julia was looking forward to her States Fair Project. It's a huge deal in third grade. When Riley was in 3rd grade, she and I took a trip to her state (Oregon) and spent time seeing the state and exploring all different things. It was a blast! Because of Coronavirus Julia and I had to cancel our trip to Rhode Island. We'll go there eventually - hopefully late summer or Thanksgiving maybe - but at the moment it's just been disappointing.
Today she was needing to work on her States Fair essay and has had a really hard time doing it. She kept saying, "What's the point?" And I get it. There's no way a virtual States Fair can even compare to the real live thing. And it's disappointing and sad. Typically students share a large presentation trifold board, give a speech as the entire LS walks through and parents listen, and wear a shirt from their state. Students also give away an item that has to do with their state. It's a big deal. Julia's been looking forward to it for a long, long time.
Preparing her essay hasn't been exciting because it's just a reminder of what she's not able to do. Riley was more than happy to help Julia get going on it today and put together a Google Doc with the outline that was shared by Mrs. White with Julia. Things like: Introduction, Share One fun Fact, Share about a Natural Landmark and a manmade landmark. Riley was sitting at her computer desk and typing while Julia laid in Riley's bed and I sat on the edge of the bed. We went through Julia's slides and looked up information to share. We asked Julia what she wanted to have included in her essay and how she wanted to have it written. Then together all three of us put it together. Sure, it's not what it might have been if Julia had written it herself, but #coranavirus - so it will be whatever we make it to be and that will be just fine.
From here Julia will write the essay onto notecards. That's her task tomorrow. Then she'll record herself sharing the information onto a Flipgrid video.
Riley was incredibly thoughtful to help Julia get going on this as Julia just didn't have the heart to care about it and is so sad about it not being what she had hoped for. There has been several things that have been disappointing - cancellation of a week long hiking trip for COE for Riley, no ERB testing for either girl, no States Fair, no end of year parties, no time with friends. Acknowledging that these are all disappointments and learning to say that it's okay to be sad and disappointed and letting them feel however they want to feel has been helpful for them as they work through it all. Nothing is how it was anticipated to be. That's hard - especially for kids. I love that the girls are leaning on each other and helping each other through this. Riley stepped up big time today and it was amazing to see. So proud of her.
