Fainting in Spanish Class
Today was the first day back from Thanksgiving break. We were all wishing for another week off. It was so nice to wake up later and have more relaxed mornings. But off we went.
It was a 'U' rotation day and I usually eat lunch early, but today I was running late and decided to eat a late lunch during Riley's lunch time. As I was eating I kept looking for her and she didn't come. I asked the teachers at the lunch table if Riley was still at school. They said she was and that she might be with her friend Ava (who was in a wheelchair with a broken leg), but Ava was at the table eating. Riley's advisor, Mrs. Coats, went over to her advisory table to ask where Riley was and one of the girls said she fell in Spanish class. Then another girl said that she had fainted. Lisa let me know about it and I got up to see if Julieta (Señora Sparks) could cover the start of my fifth grade class so I could find Riley and see what was needed.
Riley was still in the Spanish room with Señora Uribe and Nurse Lainey. She was still shaking and eating a hamburger. She had been sitting in Spanish doing her work and went to crack her back. As she turned she hit her right elbow really hard into the edge of the wall. She told us that it felt like she was seeing through a kaleidoscope because everything was blurry and spinning. She waited for several minutes and didn't get any work done because she was dizzy. It came time to get up and leave for lunch, but she ended up falling over off her high stool and fainting to the ground. Senora Uribe said that thought Riley had just fallen and tripped, but she was shaking and when she went to help move her she was stiff and not alert. She helped get her up and Riley was sweating and very pale. Once she got her up and standing Riley was leaning and wobbly as she tried to walk. Senora Uribe helped her sit in a chair and got her water and some chocolate.
Riley began eating and drinking and was still shaking by the time I got there, but the nurse said the shaking was much better than what it had been. We talked about how this has happened before and things we can do to help her. I'm so grateful to work where the girls attend school and thankful for such caring people at work. Riley didn't want to go home and wanted to finish out her day at school. So grateful that she felt well enough to stay, but was also concerned about her until I saw her again at the end of the day. She stayed inside from soccer practice and we came home right away. It's been a low-key night for her of relaxing on the couch and we've put literally no pressure on her to do anything. So grateful that she's okay and planning to make a dr. appointment for her to get sugar levels tested.
