Crazy Weather
It was a dark and calm night and then... BAM! It happens.
We had quite the thunderstorm this afternoon. The thunder appeared to be directly over our house and the house shook. I love the Dallas storms! Several weeks ago we had even crazier weather that caused destruction to many of our friends homes and our area. Julia saw that we hadn't blogged about it and asked if we could - so here it is.
We were all home and it had been raining. I was putting Riley to bed and Jeremy had just put Julia down to bed - in fact the lights were off and they were falling asleep already. Riley and I were still reading and the lights went out. We heard sirens and it sounded like there was a lot of them. At first I thought it was just a lot of police sirens and then realized that we were hearing tornado sirens going off. The wind and rain was crazy. I called out to Jeremy to tell him that the power was out and sirens going off. We hadn't been expecting bad weather - at least not that either of us had known. The girls and I went into Riley's closet. Jeremy walked out to look at the weather and then came in to join us. (Poor Val was wandering around because we didn't think it was close... lesson learned - take the dog with us EVERY time!) We were in the closet for several minutes. Jeremy was actually watching the Cowboys game - they were playing and he had wanted to see it. At one point Julia said, "Dad! Why are you watching the Cowboy game during a tornado?" When the sirens died down, we came out.
It wasn't too long after that we found out how close the tornado had been. Roughly 1/2 a mile to a mile south of us was major destruction. Homes were completely destroyed, roofs ripped off homes, trees ripped out of the ground and laying on homes/in streets, large shopping centers at March and Webb Chapel as well as Preston and Royal were devastated. School was cancelled that Monday (the storm was on Sunday) because roads were blocked and families were dealing with their situations.
It's been about a month or so since it happened and several families from our school are still living in apartments or other locations because it will take months, and for some a few years, before their homes are fixed. So grateful for God's provision and protection for all of us. Not one person was killed in the storm.
