Bike Rides

One of the best things we did this summer was to purchase bikes for all of us.  Found them online through sales and posts on Craigslist.  Jeremy, Riley, and I were able to get discounted nice bikes that are all the same brand.  Riley had outgrown her old bike and now Julia fits that one.  We were able to get new tires on it and repair a flat tire on her old bike so that we can hopefully sell it.

The girls and I have spent several days riding bikes on the new Northaven Trail in Dallas.  I love that it's so close and that there are lights for crossing main roads.  Riley and I set out to ride the trail today and decided to ride through a neighborhood near the school before returning home.  We ended up riding 6 miles.  On the way back the wind was pushing so hard that we were heading up a hill and both of us were laughing because it literally felt like we were moving backwards or making no progress at all.  Plus it was hard so we just laughed.

When we first got the bikes one of the things we wanted to do was to ride the trail all the way to school.  It's just under 2.5 miles each way and an easy route.  All of us woke up early on a Monday morning to complete the ride.  I had a conference scheduled with a family for 7:30am so we left earlier than we thought we'd need just to be sure I had enough time to prep and change for the conference.  We carried backpacks on our backs, lunch boxes inside, and everything was set.  It was a fairly chilly ride as it was early fall, but we didn't care.  We brought uniforms and my teaching clothes to change into once we arrived at school.  Unfortunately it took us quite a bit longer than anticipated because Julia's bike tires were making sounds.  We'd gone about almost halfway to the school and she was working so hard to get the bike to go.  It didn't sound right. I had her stop and sure enough - she had two flat tires.

We called Jeremy to come pick her up and pick up her bike.  He had actually mentioned that it was possible one of us could get a flat tire on the way and so it was somewhat (not at all) funny that it happened the first time we road our bikes to school.  Jeremy met us and Julia was so upset.  We felt so bad for her.  Her bike tires had just been fixed and now here they were - flat again.  She got in the car with Jeremy and her bike was in the back.  Riley and I continued to ride to school so that I could get to the conference on time.  As we walked the bikes inside to my room we saw that the family had arrived early and was already there.  It was somewhat embarrassing walking up in biker shorts, a helmet, and all, but at the same time I loved that we could bike to school and it felt great.

Riley and I rode our bikes one other time this fall.  On the way home she rode by herself because I have piano lessons after school - she did awesome!  It was nice to give her that freedom.  I'm hoping we can all ride our bikes again to school soon.  Especially now that they are all fixed up again!
